Rolling Warehouse Ladders
Rolling ladders let workers reach high shelves in warehouses, stockrooms and stores. They are handy, but a ladder that rolls or tips when you do not expect it can put you on the floor fast.

- Retail
- General Industry
Types
- Rolling step ladders (rolling platform ladders): a step ladder or platform on casters, often with a handrail and a lock-step design.
- Rolling library ladders: hang from a rail on the shelving and slide along it.
- Order-picker stands: a few steps with a wide platform; the brakes lock when you step on.
Before you climb
- Read the label for the duty rating and the maximum load, including you and what you carry
- Look for bent rails, loose bolts, cracked rungs or missing feet
- Check that the wheels turn freely and the brake or lock works. Many ladders lock when weight is applied; confirm that by pushing down on the first step
- Clear the floor of pallet wrap, cords, boxes and spills
- Make sure the rail or track (for library ladders) is clean and the hooks are secure
Safe use
- Face the ladder when going up and down, and keep three points of contact (two hands and a foot, or two feet and a hand).
- Keep your belt buckle between the side rails; do not lean out. Move the ladder instead.
- Use a hand line, a belt pouch or a second person to move items. Do not carry anything that stops you gripping.
- Use the ladder only on a level, firm floor. Do not use it on ramps, dock plates or wet surfaces.
- Pick the right height. Do not stand on the top step or cap unless the manufacturer says it is made for that.
- Do not ride the ladder while it moves or push off shelving to make it roll.
- Do not let two people climb at once.
- Do not use a ladder with bent steps, damaged casters or a loose brake. Tag it and take it out of service.
- Do not climb in the aisle where forklifts or pallet jacks may hit you. See Warehouse Safety.
Warning: Standing on a stack of boxes or a pallet instead of a ladder is a common cause of warehouse falls. Always use the right equipment.
