Jobsite Etiquette & Crew Rules
Every jobsite has written rules, and a lot of unwritten ones. Following them shows respect, builds trust with your crew and other trades, and a lot of them are really about safety.
- Construction
Show up ready
- Arrive early enough to be geared up and at the start-of-shift meeting on time.
- Bring your PPE, tools you’re expected to have, water and lunch.
- Come rested and sober. See Fitness for Duty.
Respect other trades
- Don’t move, borrow or damage another trade’s materials, tools or work without asking.
- Never remove guardrails, hole covers, barricades or lockout devices. If you must move a guardrail for your work, get permission, replace it, and tell the controlling contractor. See Multi-Employer Worksites.
- Don’t work above another crew without coordinating.
- Protect finished work.
Keep it clean
- Clean as you go and leave your area better than you found it. See Housekeeping.
- Keep portable toilets and break areas clean; report problems.
- Use designated smoking areas only.
Phones, music and tools
- Follow site rules on phones. Never use one while operating equipment, on a ladder, or in a traffic area. See Cell Phone Distractions.
- Earbuds and headphones usually aren’t allowed; you need to hear alarms and warnings.
- Ask before borrowing tools, return them clean and in the same condition, and report damage.
Respect people
- No horseplay, pranks or hazing. Jobsite pranks have caused serious injuries.
- No slurs, offensive graffiti, threats or harassment. See Discrimination & Harassment.
- Don’t make new workers do dangerous tasks to “prove themselves.”
New on site? Watch, listen and ask questions. Most experienced workers respect someone who asks rather than guesses. See Your First Day.
