Visitors & Delivery Drivers on Site
Clients, inspectors, vendors and delivery drivers don’t know your site’s hazards, alarms or traffic patterns. They walk into blind spots, under loads and onto open decks. A simple visitor and delivery process protects them and your crew.

Visitors
- Sign in and out, so everyone is accounted for in an emergency
- Short safety briefing: today’s hazards, restricted areas, alarm signal and muster point
- Required PPE issued: hard hat, safety glasses, hi-vis and proper footwear
- An escort who knows the site, for anyone without site training
- Kept out of active work zones: lifts, excavations, hot work and leading edges
Visitors who aren’t dressed for the site (sneakers, shorts) should wait in a safe area or be turned back. It’s not rude; it’s the rule for everyone.
Deliveries
- Schedule deliveries and tell the driver where to enter, park and unload.
- Post a site map and signs for delivery routes, speed limits and the unloading zone.
- Assign a trained spotter for backing trucks. See Backing & Spotters.
- Keep the unloading area clear of workers, and away from overhead power lines and excavation edges.
- Have drivers wear hi-vis and stay in a safe spot, usually in the cab or a marked area, while loads are lifted off by crane or forklift.
- Check that loads haven’t shifted before opening curtains or removing straps.
Watch the struck-by zone. Delivery drivers have been crushed between trucks and materials, and struck by falling loads during unloading. Nobody stands under or beside a load being lifted, and nobody climbs onto a load to release straps unless fall hazards are controlled. See Struck-By & Caught-Between.
Plants and warehouses
- Truck drivers should stay in designated driver areas, not wander the dock or warehouse floor.
- Make sure the trailer is restrained before forklifts enter. See Warehouse & Loading Dock Safety.
- Contractors and vendors should get the same hazard information as employees for the areas they work in.
