Mini Excavators
Mini (compact) excavators are often rented and run by workers with little training. Because they’re small and light, they tip over easily on slopes, trench edges and trailers.

Before operating
- Trained on this machine; read the manual and decals
- Seatbelt present and ROPS/TOPS cab or canopy intact
- Quick coupler pin locked; tracks and pins in good shape
- Utilities marked; overhead lines checked
Operating safely
- Wear the seatbelt. Many mini-ex deaths happen when operators are thrown out in a rollover.
- Lower the dozer blade for stability while digging.
- Dig with the tracks perpendicular to the trench when possible, and stay back from the edge.
- Swing loads slowly and keep them low, especially on slopes.
- Load onto trailers on level ground with ramps properly spaced and secured. Track straight on and off.
- Don’t travel across steep slopes or with the boom extended high.
- Don’t lift loads without a rated lifting point and the lift chart.
- Don’t let anyone inside the swing radius. The tail swings too, even on “zero tail swing” models with the boom out.
Quick couplers
Buckets that fall off quick couplers have killed workers standing in trenches. After every attachment change:
- The locking pin or wedge is fully engaged (check the indicator)
- You’ve done the test the manufacturer requires, such as curling the bucket and pressing it against the ground
- No one stands under or in front of the bucket until it’s confirmed locked
Trailers and transport
Many mini excavator rollovers happen on trailer ramps. Load on level ground, line up straight, keep the blade and bucket low, and go slowly. Never turn on the ramps. Chain the machine at its tie-down points and lower the boom. See Trailers & Towing.
Rental machines
- Ask the rental company for a walk-through of the controls. Control patterns differ between brands, and many machines have a switch that changes them.
- Confirm which control pattern is set before you dig. A surprise boom movement can hit a coworker.
- Read the safety decals and the manual in the machine.
Workers on foot
- Stay out of the swing radius and away from the edges of the trench while the machine is working.
- Get the operator’s attention and wait for them to set the controls in neutral and lock out the hydraulics (raise the control lockout lever) before approaching.
- Never stand in a trench under the bucket.
