Battery Charging Rooms
Forklift and industrial battery charging areas combine acid, heavy batteries, electricity and explosive gas. A spark in the wrong place can cause an explosion, and a splash of acid can blind.

Hazards
- Hydrogen gas: lead-acid batteries release hydrogen while charging. It is flammable from about 4 percent in air. See Hydrogen.
- Sulfuric acid in the electrolyte burns skin and eyes. See Corrosives.
- Heavy batteries, often over 1,000 pounds, that crush and strain.
- Electric shock and short circuits from tools, jewelry and cables.
- Fire from sparks or overheated chargers. Lithium-ion batteries add thermal runaway risk. See Battery Safety.
Rules for the room
- Provide ventilation that keeps hydrogen well below its explosive limit. Do not block vents.
- Prohibit smoking, open flames and sparks in the area and post signs. OSHA requires this for charging areas (1910.178(g)).
- Install an eyewash and shower within reach, on a clear path, and test it weekly. See Eyewash & Showers.
- Provide facilities for flushing and neutralizing spilled electrolyte and for fire protection.
- Use conveyors, overhead hoists or lifting devices to move batteries. Do not lift by hand.
- Keep vent caps in place when charging; keep tools and metal off the top of batteries (or use insulated covers).
- Turn the charger off before connecting or disconnecting the battery.
PPE and practices
- Face shield and chemical splash goggles, acid-resistant gloves, apron and boots
- Remove rings, watches and metal jewelry
- Add water only after charging, with approved methods and the right level, and use distilled water
- Wash hands after work; never eat or drink in the area
- Train workers on handling, spill response and emergency steps. See Spill Response
- For lithium-ion fleets, follow the maker's charging and storage rules and fire plans
Danger: Never lay tools on top of a battery. A dropped wrench can short the terminals and cause an arc, explosion or acid spray.
