Routers
Routers spin bits at over 20,000 RPM to shape edges and cut grooves. Feeding the wrong direction or taking too deep a cut can make the router grab and run.
- Construction
- Woodworking
Before routing
- Bit sharp, undamaged and seated deep in the collet (at least 3/4 of the shank), collet tight
- Speed set right for the bit diameter (larger bits run slower)
- Work clamped down
- Unplugged or battery out while changing bits
Routing safely
- Feed against the bit’s rotation. For a handheld router viewed from above, move left to right along an outside edge (counter-clockwise around the outside of a piece).
- Take several shallow passes rather than one deep cut.
- Hold the router with both hands and let it reach full speed before contact.
- On a router table, use the fence, guard, featherboards and push blocks.
- Wear safety glasses, hearing protection, and use dust collection.
- Don’t “climb cut” (feed with the rotation) unless trained and taking very light passes.
- Don’t set the router down until the bit stops.
