PPE That Fits: Women & All Body Types

PPE that doesn’t fit doesn’t protect. Oversized gloves get caught in machines, loose harnesses can cause serious injury in a fall, and ill-fitting respirators leak. Women and workers with smaller or larger frames often struggle to get PPE that fits.

The rule

OSHA requires that PPE fit each worker properly. General industry rules already said so, and in January 2025 OSHA updated the construction rule to say it plainly: PPE must properly fit each affected employee. Employers must provide PPE in sizes and styles that fit, not just “one size fits most.”

Employers must also pay for most required PPE. Common exceptions are everyday clothing, ordinary safety-toe boots and prescription safety glasses that the employer allows you to wear off the job. Ask your employer about their policy.

Common fit problems

How to tell if it fits

PPEGood fit
HarnessBack D-ring between shoulder blades; chest strap at mid-chest; flat hand fits under leg straps. See Harness Fitting
RespiratorPasses a fit test for that make, model and size; seal check passes every time you put it on
Hard hatSuspension adjusted so it stays on when you bend over, without a headache; sits level
GlovesFingertips reach the end of the glove; you can grip tools firmly; no loose material at the tips
BootsToes don’t touch the toe cap; heel doesn’t slip; fit with your work socks at the end of the day
Safety glassesStay put when you look down; no big gaps at the sides or top
Hearing protectionEarplugs sized for your ear canal and inserted deep; earmuffs seal around the ear
Coveralls, rain gear, hi-visCan be fastened; sleeves and legs don’t drag or catch

Larger and taller workers

Many standard harnesses and fall arrest connectors are rated up to 310 pounds, including tools and clothing. Workers above that need equipment rated for their weight, and the fall clearance may be different. Extended-size coveralls, rain gear and FR clothing are available but often must be ordered ahead.
