Why it matters

Thousands of workers suffer eye injuries every year, and most could have been prevented with the right protection.

Talking points

  • Look for the mark: safety eyewear should be marked Z87.1, and Z87+ for high impact.
  • Side protection: use glasses with side shields or goggles. Flying particles come from all directions.
  • Match the hazard: goggles for dust and splashes, face shields over glasses for grinding and chemicals, and the right shade for welding.
  • Prescription glasses: ordinary glasses aren't safety glasses. Use prescription safety glasses or wear over-glasses protection.
  • Keep them clean: dirty, scratched or fogged lenses cause accidents. Replace damaged eyewear.
  • If something gets in your eye: don't rub it. Flush with clean water for at least 15 minutes and get medical care.

Ask the crew

  1. Which tasks today could throw particles or splash into our eyes?
  2. Where is the nearest eyewash, and can we reach it in 10 seconds?
  3. Who needs prescription safety glasses?

Before we start work today: Find the eyewash station and check that it is clear and working.
