Why it matters

Jobsite fires spread fast because of fuel, wood, trash, and welding or heating work. Knowing what to do in the first moments saves lives.

Talking points

  • Know the locations: find the nearest extinguisher and the exits before work begins.
  • Use PASS: Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle and Sweep side to side.
  • Only fight small fires: fight a fire only if it is small, you have a clear exit and the right extinguisher. Otherwise get out and call 911.
  • Right type: most jobsite extinguishers are ABC. Don't use water on electrical or flammable liquid fires.
  • Prevent fires: store flammables in approved containers away from heat, keep exits clear, and follow smoking rules.
  • Check the extinguishers monthly: look for the pressure gauge in the green zone and a safety pin in place.

Ask the crew

  1. Where are the nearest extinguishers and exits right now?
  2. What is our fire hazard today: hot work, heaters, fuels?
  3. When do we decide to leave instead of fighting a fire?

Before we start work today: Find and check the nearest extinguisher, and walk your exit path.
