Hard Hats & Head Protection
Why it matters
A head injury can change a life in an instant. A hard hat only works if it is worn, fits well and is in good shape.
Talking points
- Wear it when needed: wear a hard hat wherever there are falling objects, overhead work, bumping hazards or electrical hazards.
- Check before use: look for cracks, dents, gouges, chalky or faded shell and a worn suspension.
- Replace after an impact: a hat that took a hard hit may be damaged inside even if it looks fine.
- Right class for the hazard: Class E hats are tested for 20,000 volts. Class G for 2,200 volts. Class C offers no electrical protection.
- Don't alter it: don't drill, cut or paint the shell, and use only stickers and accessories the maker allows.
- Wear it correctly: adjust the suspension, wear it forward unless it's rated for reverse wear, and use a chin strap when working at heights or in wind.
Ask the crew
- Where on this site could something fall on us?
- Who has a hat that is cracked, old or modified?
- Which accessories are we allowed to add to our hats?
Before we start work today: Inspect your hard hat and replace it if it is cracked, damaged or past the maker's date.
