Mental Health & the 988 Lifeline
Why it matters
Construction and trade workers have high rates of stress, depression and suicide. Caring about each other is part of safety.
Talking points
- It affects everyone: stress, anxiety, depression and burnout are common and treatable.
- Know the signs: withdrawal, mood changes, drinking more, giving things away, talking about being a burden or wanting to die.
- Ask directly: ask 'Are you thinking about suicide?' It doesn't plant the idea. It can open the door to help.
- Listen and stay: listen without judging. Don't leave someone alone if they are in immediate danger, and call 911.
- Call or text 988: the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is free, confidential and open 24 hours a day in the U.S.
- Use your resources: ask about your employee assistance program, your doctor or a counselor. Getting help early works.
Ask the crew
- How can we check in with each other without making it awkward?
- Who knows what resources are available through our employer?
- What can we do to make it easier to ask for help?
Before we start work today: Share the 988 number, and put it where the crew can see it.
