Struck-By Hazards
Why it matters
Being struck by an object or vehicle is one of the leading causes of construction deaths, along with falls, electrocution and caught-in or between hazards.
Talking points
- Know the four types: falling, flying, swinging and rolling objects, as well as moving vehicles and equipment.
- Wear the PPE: hard hat, eye protection and a high-visibility vest or shirt.
- Stay out of the line of fire: never stand under loads, overhead work or in the swing radius of equipment.
- Barricade and mark: keep people out of areas below overhead work, and use toeboards and netting to stop falling tools.
- Secure tools and materials: tie off tools at height and stack and secure materials so they can't roll or fall.
- Connect with equipment operators: make eye contact before walking near equipment, and agree on signals.
Ask the crew
- What is overhead right now that could fall?
- Which machines will be moving near us today?
- How will we keep people out from under overhead work?
Before we start work today: Mark and barricade the areas under overhead work before the crew starts.
