Pile Drivers & Foundation Workers
Pile drivers install deep foundations, sheet piling, docks and bridges using cranes, leads and hammers, often over water. Heavy suspended loads and intense noise are constant.
- Construction
- Marine
Top hazards
- Struck by swinging piles, hammers and leads
- Crane and rigging failures
- Drowning when working over or near water
- Extreme noise and vibration
- Falls from leads, barges and platforms
- Pinch points when stabbing and guiding piles
Key practices
- Stay out of the fall zone and use tag lines to control piles.
- Inspect hammer lines, leads and rigging every shift.
- Wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket when working over or near water, and have a manned skiff or ring buoys available.
- Wear double hearing protection near impact hammers.
- Use fall protection on leads and elevated work.
Types of pile work
- Driven piles: steel H-piles, pipe piles, precast concrete and timber driven with impact or vibratory hammers.
- Sheet piling: interlocking steel sheets for retaining walls and cofferdams.
- Drilled shafts and augered piles: holes drilled with large rigs and filled with concrete and rebar cages.
- Marine work: docks, piers and bridges from barges and floating platforms.
Stabbing and handling piles
- Piles are lifted from horizontal to vertical, which can swing or kick the bottom end. Stay clear of the pile’s path and use tag lines.
- Use rated pile-handling shackles and padeyes, inspected before each use.
- Keep hands out of the gap between the pile and the leads or template.
- Never stand under the hammer or the pile being driven.
Drilled shafts
An open drilled shaft is a deep, narrow hole. Cover or guard it whenever it isn’t being worked, keep workers back from the edge, and never enter one without the confined space and protective systems the plan requires.
Noise and vibration
Impact hammers are among the loudest tools in construction. Use earplugs and earmuffs together, limit time close to the hammer, and get regular hearing tests. See Noise.
Daily checklist
- Crane and rigging inspected; lift plan reviewed
- Hammer lines, leads and hoses inspected
- Exclusion zone around the hammer and pile marked
- Life jackets, ring buoys and skiff ready for marine work
- Double hearing protection near impact hammers
- Open shafts covered or guarded
