Window Cleaners
Window cleaners work on ladders, roofs, rope descent systems (“bosun’s chairs”) and suspended platforms high on buildings. Falls are the main hazard, and they almost always involve a failed anchor, a missing backup line, or a ladder in the wrong place.

Top hazards
- Falls from rope descent systems and suspended platforms
- Falls from ladders, especially on uneven ground or near power lines
- Falls from roofs while rigging
- Anchor or rope failure
- Wind and storms
- Dropped tools and equipment striking people below
Rope descent systems
- Certified anchorages: before an RDS is used, the building owner must tell the employer in writing that each anchorage has been identified, tested, certified and maintained. Ask to see it.
- Two lines: a main line for the descent system and a separate, independently anchored fall arrest line for your harness.
- Height limit: OSHA limits RDS use to 300 feet above grade unless the employer can show that’s infeasible or more hazardous.
- Rope protection at parapets and edges so lines can’t be cut.
- Inspect ropes, descent devices, harness and connectors before each use.
- Training: only trained workers rig and use the system.
Weather: don’t use rope descent systems or suspended platforms in storms or gusty or high winds. Wind can swing you into the building or tangle your lines.
Ladders and roofs
- Set ladders on firm, level ground, at the right angle, and tie them off. See Extension Ladders.
- Use fiberglass ladders and stay at least 10 feet from overhead power lines. See Overhead Power Lines.
- Use water-fed poles from the ground when possible to avoid working at height.
- Use fall protection when rigging near roof edges. See Roof Work.
Before you go over the edge
- Anchorage certification in hand
- Main line and independent fall arrest line rigged to separate anchors
- Edge protection on ropes
- Equipment inspected
- Weather and wind checked
- Area below barricaded
- Rescue plan ready
