ANSI Z359: Fall Protection Code
The ANSI/ASSP Z359 Fall Protection Code is a family of voluntary consensus standards for fall protection equipment and programs. OSHA sets the minimum legal rules; Z359 sets more detailed design, testing and use requirements that most manufacturers build their equipment to.

Z359 and OSHA
- OSHA rules are the law: like 6-foot fall protection in construction, 5,000-pound anchors and 1,800-pound maximum arresting force. See Personal Fall Arrest Systems.
- Z359 is voluntary, but OSHA can use it as evidence of industry practice, and many employers, owners and GCs require Z359-compliant gear.
- Where Z359 is stricter, following it gives extra protection.
Reading the labels
- Look for “ANSI Z359” and the specific part number on harnesses, lanyards, SRLs and connectors
- Check the capacity range (many Z359 products are rated for users of 130 to 310 pounds, including tools and clothing)
- Check the rated free fall distance and clearance information on lanyards and SRLs
- Check for leading-edge ratings before using equipment where a line could run over an edge
- Note the date of manufacture and the inspection log
Compatibility: Z359 expects all parts of a system to be compatible. Mixing brands or using gear outside its labeled use can void the protection. See Snap Hooks & Connectors.
