Every year workplace fires and explosions kill and injure workers and destroy businesses, and many of those losses come from missing exits, blocked extinguishers, poor housekeeping, unplanned evacuations and employees who were never trained. This in-depth course explains OSHA's emergency action plan and fire prevention plan requirements (29 CFR 1910.38 and 1910.39), exit route rules (1910.36 and 1910.37), portable fire extinguisher training and maintenance (1910.157), fire detection, alarm and sprinkler systems, and the construction fire protection rules (29 CFR 1926 Subpart F). You will learn the chemistry of fire and the classes of fires, how common workplace fires start (electrical, heating, cooking, smoking, hot work, flammable liquids, combustible dust, lithium-ion batteries), how to prevent them, how to select and use a fire extinguisher with the PASS method, how to recognize alarms and evacuate quickly and safely, how to help people with disabilities, what to do in tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, chemical releases and active threat situations, how to conduct drills, and how fire wardens and managers keep the plan alive. It is an awareness-level course. It does not replace hands-on extinguisher practice or site-specific plans and drills required by your employer and fire authority.
