Welding, Cutting and Hot Work Safety: Complete Course
How to weld, cut, braze and grind without fires, burns, fume exposure, arc eye, shock or gas explosions: hot work permits, fire watches, ventilation, PPE, electrical safety, cylinders and torches, confined spaces and special metals.
- About 5 hours
- 7 modules
- 25 lessons
- Certificate included
Welding and cutting put an arc or flame hotter than 6,000 degrees Fahrenheit next to people, fuels and combustible buildings. This in-depth course teaches the hazards and controls of welding, cutting, brazing, soldering and grinding on job sites and in shops. It follows OSHA's welding, cutting and brazing rules (29 CFR 1910 Subpart Q and 1926 Subpart J), fire prevention rules and NFPA 51B. Topics include the common welding processes and their hazards, the hot work permit system and fire watch, preventing fires and explosions, fumes, gases and metal-specific hazards (galvanized, stainless, painted and coated metals), ventilation and respirators, arc radiation, burns and PPE, electrical safety for arc welding, compressed gas cylinders, oxy-fuel and plasma equipment, welding in confined spaces and on containers, working at heights, and emergency response. It is an awareness-level course. It does not teach welding skills or certify welders, and it does not replace the hands-on training and procedures your employer must provide.
What you’ll learn
- Identify the hazards of arc welding, gas welding, cutting, brazing, soldering and grinding
- Explain the hot work permit process, fire watch and fire prevention requirements
- Control fumes and gases with ventilation and respirators, including special metals and coatings
- Select and use welding PPE and protect against arc flash, burns, sparks and noise
- Apply electrical safety rules for arc welding equipment and avoid shock
- Handle compressed gas cylinders, regulators, hoses and torches safely
- Recognize the hazards of confined spaces, containers, heights and special locations
- Respond to welding fires, burns, eye injuries, gas leaks and other emergencies
Who it’s for
Welders, welder helpers and apprentices, ironworkers, pipefitters, plumbers, sheet metal workers, mechanics, maintenance staff, fabricators, farm and ranch workers, contractors, supervisors, fire watch personnel and safety coordinators. No welding experience is needed.
