Chemical Storage & Compatibility

Storing chemicals in alphabetical order or wherever there’s room can put an acid next to bleach or an oxidizer next to gasoline. If containers leak or a shelf collapses, incompatible chemicals can react, catch fire or release toxic gas. Good storage keeps them apart and contained.

Separate by hazard, not by alphabet

Keep apartWhy
Acids and bases (caustics)Violent reactions and heat
Oxidizers and flammables or organicsOxidizers feed fires and can ignite them

Water-reactive materials and waterFire, explosion or toxic gas
Oxygen cylinders and fuel gas cylindersAt least 20 feet or a fire-rated barrier when stored
