Power Tool Safety Basics
Power tools can be electric (corded or battery), pneumatic, hydraulic, gas-powered or powder-actuated. Whatever the power source, the same core rules apply.

Before you use any power tool
- You’ve been trained on this tool and read the manual
- Guards are in place and working; never removed or wedged open
- Switch works and turns the tool off; trigger locks are not taped down
- Cord and plug not damaged; ground pin present; tool is double-insulated or grounded
- Plugged into a GFCI-protected outlet or cord on construction sites. See GFCI Protection.
- Blade, bit or wheel is the right type, sharp, rated for the tool’s speed, and installed tightly
- Work is clamped or secured, leaving both hands free
- PPE is on: safety glasses at a minimum, plus face shield, hearing protection, gloves or respirator as needed
The universal rules
- Disconnect the tool (unplug, remove the battery, or shut off the air) before changing blades, bits or accessories, and when not in use.
- Keep good footing and balance. Don’t overreach.
- Keep cords and hoses away from heat, oil, sharp edges and the cutting path.
- Keep observers at a safe distance.
- Tie back long hair and avoid loose clothing, jewelry and dangling hoodie strings.
- Remove damaged tools from service and tag them “Do Not Use.”
- Don’t carry a tool by its cord or hose, or yank the cord to unplug it.
- Don’t keep your finger on the trigger while carrying a plugged-in tool.
- Don’t use electric tools in wet conditions unless they’re approved for it and GFCI-protected.
- Don’t use tools in flammable atmospheres unless they’re rated for it.
Battery tools: lithium-ion batteries can catch fire if damaged, crushed, overheated or charged with the wrong charger. Don’t use swollen or damaged batteries, and charge them away from combustibles.
