Why it matters

Hundreds of workers are killed each year in work zones. Most are struck by vehicles or equipment, and many by their own site vehicles.

Talking points

  • Be seen: wear a high-visibility vest or clothing, with the right class for the road speed, plus reflective gear at night.
  • Never assume they see you: drivers can be distracted, speeding or impaired. Stay alert and keep your back from traffic where possible.
  • Separate people from traffic: use barriers, cones and signs, and follow the traffic control plan. Don't move devices without approval.
  • Flaggers and spotters: use trained flaggers and spotters, and stay out of equipment paths.
  • Plan your exit: know where you'd go if a vehicle comes into the zone, and keep an escape path clear.
  • Inside the site too: follow internal traffic rules, keep walkways separate from haul roads and wait for equipment to stop.

Ask the crew

  1. Where do vehicles and people cross paths today?
  2. Who is our flagger or spotter?
  3. What is our escape route if a vehicle enters the zone?

Before we start work today: Check that everyone is wearing high-visibility clothing, and walk the work zone barriers and signs.
