Snow Removal & Plow Operators
Snow removal work happens in the worst conditions: dark, icy, cold and often after hours with no sleep. Plow drivers back into pedestrians and parked cars, crews fall from roofs clearing snow, and shovelers suffer heart attacks.

Plow drivers
- Fatigue: storms bring very long shifts. Plan rest breaks and switch drivers. See Drowsy Driving.
- Backing: parking lots are full of people walking and cars backing. Use cameras and mirrors, back slowly, and get out and look when unsure.
- Visibility: keep windows, mirrors and lights clear of snow and ice.
- Hidden hazards: walk lots ahead of the season to mark curbs, islands, drains and fire hydrants.
- Carbon monoxide: don’t idle in a truck with the tailpipe blocked by snow. See Carbon Monoxide.
Roof snow removal
Workers fall from roofs and through skylights while clearing snow, and roofs can collapse under the load. Use snow rakes from the ground when possible. If you must go on the roof, use fall protection, know where skylights are (snow hides them), and check the roof’s load capacity. See Fragile Roofs.
Snowblowers
- Never clear a clogged chute with your hand. Shut off the engine, wait for all parts to stop, and use a clearing tool. Many finger amputations happen this way.
- Refuel only with the engine off and cool.
- Keep hands and feet away from the auger.
Shoveling
- Warm up first, and take frequent breaks
- Push snow instead of lifting when you can
- Lift small loads with your legs; don’t twist or throw over your shoulder
- Stop immediately for chest pain, shortness of breath or dizziness, and call 911
- Use ice melt and traction aids on walks
Cold and ice
Dress in layers, keep spare gloves and socks, and watch coworkers for signs of cold stress. Use ice cleats when walking on icy lots. See Cold Stress and Cold-Weather Clothing.
