Why it matters

Workers are crushed, pinned and trapped by equipment, collapsing trenches and moving machinery. These injuries are often severe or fatal.

Talking points

  • Know the pinch points: between a machine and a wall, between moving and fixed objects, and in rotating or moving parts.
  • Stay out of the swing radius: don't stand between equipment and a fixed object, and keep out of the swing area of cranes and excavators.
  • Never reach into moving machines: stop the machine, lock it out and wait for it to stop completely before clearing jams.
  • Guards stay on: don't remove guards, and report any that are missing or damaged.
  • Trenches and excavations: don't work in a trench that is deeper than 5 feet unless it is protected, and stay out of any trench that hasn't been inspected.
  • Dress for safety: no loose clothing, jewelry or dangling hair near moving parts.

Ask the crew

  1. Where are the pinch points or crush hazards in today's work?
  2. Who might be standing where they could be caught between equipment and a wall?
  3. What do we do before we clear a jam?

Before we start work today: Identify the pinch points and swing zones in your work area and keep people out of them.
