Why it matters

Power tools cut, crush and throw things at high speed. Guards, cords and good habits prevent most injuries.

Talking points

  • Guards stay on: never remove or tie back a guard, and don't use a tool whose guard is damaged.
  • Unplug first: disconnect the cord or remove the battery before changing blades or bits, adjusting or clearing a jam.
  • Inspect the tool and cord: look for cracks, frayed cords, missing ground pins and loose parts. Tag out damaged tools.
  • Use GFCI power: use GFCI protection outdoors, in wet areas and on temporary power.
  • Dress for it: wear eye protection, hearing protection when needed, and no loose clothing, jewelry or dangling hair.
  • Control the tool: use both hands where designed, clamp the work, don't carry a tool by its cord and let it stop before setting it down.

Ask the crew

  1. Which power tools are we using, and what are their main hazards?
  2. Do all of them have guards and good cords?
  3. Where will we plug in, and is it GFCI protected?

Before we start work today: Inspect each tool and cord, and tag out any that are damaged.
